• Dense green vegetation in dry landscape = subsurface moisture below
• Rock outcrops and cliff bases — water seeps through fractures, pools at base
• Animal tracks converging — multiple tracks merging = water source nearby
• Insect swarms (midges, mosquitoes) in dry conditions = water within 500m
• Bird flight paths at dawn/dusk — grain-eating birds (cockatoos, pigeons, doves) fly low and direct toward water morning and evening
🌿 VEGETATION INDICATORS
• Melaleuca (Paperbark) — almost always within metres of permanent or seasonal water
• River She-Oak (Casuarina) — lines creek banks and drainage lines
• Native ferns and mosses — indicate consistent moisture, especially on south-facing slopes
• Reeds and rushes — permanent or near-permanent water
• Eucalyptus with bright green foliage in dry season — roots reaching permanent water table
• Sandstone escarpment bases — water seeps through porous rock and pools at the contact zone
🏜️ ARID AND OUTBACK REGIONS
• Dry creek bed outer bends — dig 30–50cm into the sand on the outside of bends where water last flowed
• Base of rocky hills and gorges — look for dark staining or green algae on rock faces
• Spinifex rings — dead centre of old spinifex rings sometimes hold moisture
• Claypans after rain — temporary but substantial. Check low-lying areas on topo map

• Yellow or orange staining on rocks — acid mine drainage in mining regions
• No other animals drinking from it — trust the wildlife
8 COLLECTION METHODS
1 ☔ RAIN AND TARP COLLECTION
• Spread any waterproof material (tarp, rain jacket, space blanket, bin bag) in a bowl shape
• Tie corners to trees or stakes — funnel low point into a container
• Even light rain on a 2m² tarp yields several litres
• Clean the collection surface first — wipe off bird droppings, sap, debris
• Let the first 2 minutes of heavy rain run off before collecting — flushes dust, bird droppings, and leaf tannins from the surface 💡 Rain water collected cleanly does not need purifying
2 🌫 DEW COLLECTION
• Before sunrise, tie absorbent cloth (shirt, bandana, socks) around your ankles
• Walk slowly through long grass, low scrub, or over rocks
• Wring cloth into container every 5–10 minutes
• Yield: up to 500ml+ per hour in good overnight dew conditions
• Also wipe broad-leaf plants directly and wring into container 💡 Dew is distilled water — pure. No purification needed unless cloth was contaminated.
3 🌳 TRANSPIRATION BAG
1. Find a healthy leafy branch on a non-toxic tree — Eucalyptus, Wattle, or Banksia work well
2. Tie a clear plastic bag tightly around a bunch of leaves — trap as much foliage as possible inside
3. Angle the bag so the lowest corner acts as a collection point
4. Leave in direct sun for 3–4 hours
5. Collect water from the low corner — this water is pure, no boiling needed
6. Yield: 100–500ml per bag per day depending on tree and sun intensity
7. Set up multiple bags simultaneously on different branches ⚠ Do NOT use on Oleander, Lantana, or any plant with milky or coloured sap
4 ⛏ DIGGING A SOAK
1. Find the outer bend of a dry creek bed or the base of sand dunes near coast
2. Dig down 30–60cm into the sand or soft soil
3. Wait — groundwater will slowly seep through and fill the hole
4. Allow sediment to fully settle — scoop from top only
5. Line hole edges with cloth to slow sediment mixing
6. Must be purified before drinking 💡 Dig in the evening — collect the overnight seepage in the morning
5 ☀️ SOLAR STILL
1. Dig a hole 60cm wide × 40cm deep in moist ground or dry creek bed
2. Place a container at the bottom centre
3. Add cut green vegetation, wet soil, or urine around (not in) the container to increase moisture
4. Cover hole completely with clear plastic — seal all edges tightly with soil
5. Place a small rock in the centre of the plastic directly above the container
6. Sun heats ground → moisture evaporates → condenses on plastic → drips into container
7. Yield: 500ml–1L per day in good conditions. Water collected is pure. ⚠ High energy cost to build — only practical for extended stays. Set up early morning.
6 🪨 ROCK FACE AND SEEP COLLECTION
• Look for dark staining, moss, or algae on rock faces — indicates consistent seepage
• Use a cloth to absorb water from wet rock — wring into container
• Channel seeps using bark or folded leaves into a container below
• Rock pools after rain — scoop carefully, disturb sediment as little as possible
• Sandstone and granite are best — limestone may have high mineral content ⚠ Always purify seep and rock pool water before drinking
7 🌿 PLANT SOURCES
• Pig's Face (Carpobrotus) — cut leaf and squeeze gel directly into mouth. Salty but hydrating. No purification needed.
• Grass trees (Xanthorrhoea) — base of leaf cluster traps dew and rain overnight
• Tree hollows — often hold rainwater. Check after rain. Purify before drinking.
• Thick vines — cut near the ground, hold the cut end upright over a container. Some vines yield drinkable fluid.
• Banana and palm trunks — split the trunk base, liquid collects in the hollow ✗ Do NOT drink: fluid from plants with milky or coloured sap, strong-smelling fluid, fluid that stings or burns the mouth
8 🌊 COASTAL — SALTWATER DISTILLATION
NEVER drink seawater directly — accelerates dehydration and causes kidney failure.
Simple distillation from saltwater:
1. Boil saltwater in a container with a lid
2. Hold a cloth or cool surface above the steam — steam condenses into fresh water
3. Wring or channel condensed water into a clean container
4. Alternatively use a solar still (Method 5) with saltwater added to the hole 💡 Slow process — combine with rain/dew collection for best results in coastal emergencies

⚖️ RATIONING RULES
• Ration sweat, not water — never restrict water artificially if you have it and are thirsty. Reduce exertion instead. Stay in deep shade during peak heat (11am–3pm).
• Rule of thirds — drink one third going out, one third coming back, keep one third in reserve at all times
• Drink small amounts frequently — 150–200ml every 15–20 min is more effective than large drinks spaced apart
• Never leave a known water source without filling every available container
• If you find water — drink to satisfaction first, then fill containers
• In group situations — pool and ration water collectively, not individually
🚨 CRITICAL THRESHOLDS
• Below 1L total reserve — stop eating entirely. Digestion (especially protein) pulls water from vital organs and accelerates dehydration
• Dark orange urine — severely dehydrated. Stop all activity, find shade, prioritise water above everything
• No urine for 8+ hours — medical emergency. Activate SOS.
• Do NOT ration to zero — drink 250ml minimum every few hours even if reserves are critically low
🫙 RESERVE MANAGEMENT
• Carry minimum 1L per hour of planned activity in heat
• Vehicle reserve — keep minimum 10L per person that is never used except in emergencies
• Wide-mouth containers are easier to fill from natural sources
• Insulate containers — reduce heat-driven evaporation loss
• Purify large batches at once while fire is going — efficient use of fuel
• Mark your water source location as a waypoint in the TRIP tile
📊 SURVIVAL TIMELINE
• 3 hours in extreme heat without water — heat stroke risk
• 1 day — significant cognitive impairment, poor decisions
• 2–3 days — organ stress, severe physical failure
• 3–5 days — survival threshold in most Australian conditions ⚠ Heat, exertion, and injury dramatically reduce this timeline. Act early — every hour matters.
RULE: ALWAYS PURIFY before drinking any water from the environment — no exceptions.
🔥 BOILING — MOST RELIABLE METHOD
1. Pre-filter through cloth, bandana or grass to remove visible sediment
2. Bring to a full rolling boil
3. At sea level to 1000m: boil for 1 full minute
4. Above 1000m altitude: boil for 3 full minutes (lower boiling point = less effective at killing pathogens)
5. Allow to cool in covered container
6. If container has lid, pour between two containers several times to re-oxygenate and improve taste 💡 Kills bacteria, viruses, protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium). Does not remove chemical contamination.
🧱 PRIMITIVE FILTER (PRE-TREATMENT)
Build a gravity filter using a container with holes in the base, layered from top to bottom:
Layer 1 (top): Coarse grass or green leaves — removes large debris Layer 2: Fine sand — removes fine sediment Layer 3: Crushed charcoal from campfire — removes odour and some chemicals Layer 4 (bottom): Fine sand again — final particle filter
Pour water through slowly. Collect in clean container below. ⚠ This removes sediment and improves taste — it does NOT kill pathogens. Always boil after filtering.
💊 CHEMICAL TREATMENT (IF AVAILABLE)
Iodine tablets: 2 tablets per litre of clear water. Wait 30 min. If cold or cloudy water, wait 60 min. Effective against bacteria and most viruses. Less effective against Cryptosporidium.
Chlorine tablets (e.g. Aquatabs): Follow manufacturer dosage. 30 min contact time for clear water.
Bleach (sodium hypochlorite — unscented only): 2 drops per litre of clear water. 8 drops per litre if cloudy. Wait 30 min before drinking.
💡 Chemical treatment does not remove sediment — pre-filter first for best results.
🧊 HYDRATION PRIORITIES
• In heat, a person needs minimum 2–3L per day — more in high exertion or extreme heat
• Signs of dehydration: dark urine, headache, dizziness, confusion, muscle cramps
• Urine colour test: pale straw = hydrated. Dark yellow/orange = dehydrated. Brown = severe — stop and rehydrate immediately
• Do not wait until thirsty — by the time you feel thirsty you are already 1–2% dehydrated
• Drink small amounts frequently rather than large amounts at once
• Do NOT ration water if you have it — drink to stay functional
